When the listing includes a bonus record
What it is
Some deluxe pressings tuck an extra record into the sleeve — a bonus 7" or EP — and the database lists its tracks right along with the album. If you digitized the album without it, the listing promises more music than your file holds. When we see that, we stop and ask before leaving anything out.
Why it matters
An extra record in the listing throws off everything we cut by at once: the track count runs over, the song lengths add up to far more than your recording, and the side letters run past the album's own. Left alone, songs get chopped into pieces to make room for tracks that aren't there.
How we notice
Before cutting, we compare the listing's running time with your recording. When the listing runs well past your file, and leaving off the extra sides at the end makes it fit closely, we show the card. Only sides beyond the album itself are ever offered — the album's own sides, all four on a double album, are never on the table.
What to do
- Proceed without the bonus record. We leave the bonus tracks out of the tracklist for this album and cut what you recorded. Your files are numbered and named for the album alone.
- My recording includes it. The bonus tracks stay, and we cut as usual. Choose this if you did record the extra record.
- Start over. Back to the beginning, for a new recording or a new search.
Your choice holds while you work on this album. Picking a different release, or starting over, clears it.
When you won't see it
- When any track in the listing has no length. Without every length, there's nothing to measure against.
- When the listing doesn't mark which side each track is on, or puts the bonus tracks somewhere other than the end.
- On an album you named yourself with the Custom button.
What we never do
We never leave a side out without your click, and we never alter your recording to make it fit. Everything happens on your Mac; the only thing that leaves it is the lookup of the album's listing.
