Halve or double a tempo
What it is
Next to the BPM field in GP-33's Get Info sit two small keys, ÷2 and ×2. One press halves the tempo, the other doubles it. Save writes your number into the file itself, the same tag any DJ app reads, so it stays with the track wherever the track goes. Nothing needs switching on.
Why a tempo reads double
Every tempo reader, ours included, listens for the pulse and counts it. A slow song that's steadily strummed or brushed really does pulse twice per beat, and the count comes back at the double. The song feels slow; the number says fast. No reader hears the difference the way you do, which is why every DJ app carries the same pair of keys, and why GP-33 has them.
How to use it
Open Get Info on the track. If the tempo reads roughly twice what you feel, press ÷2. If it reads half, press ×2. Then Save.
- A halved odd number rounds up, so the tag stays a whole number, the way DJ apps expect it.
- The keys go quiet when the field is empty. There's nothing to halve.
- Cancel or Esc leaves the file as it was.
A quick way to check yourself: tap along with the song for a few seconds. If your taps land about half as often as the number suggests, it's doubled.
What we never do
We never change the audio. The keys change one number in the file's tags, on your Mac, and nothing leaves it. The number is yours from then on.
